Across Indian competitive exams, incorrect photo uploads cause thousands of rejections every year. The top causes are: (1) coloured background — blue studio backgrounds are auto-rejected by every major portal; use our background remover to replace it with white before uploading; (2) file size outside the window — both too large and too small cause portal errors; (3) wrong pixel dimensions — UPSC requires a square photo, SSC requires 275×354 px, NTA exams need 200×230 px; and (4) wrong format — some portals reject PNG even if visually identical to JPEG. NTA exams (NEET, JEE, CUET, UGC NET) share similar specs: 200×230 px portrait, 10-200 KB or 10-300 KB, white/light background, 80% face coverage. SSC deviates: 275×354 px, 20-50 KB tight window. UPSC is the outlier: square format, widest KB range (20-300 KB). GATE from IITs has the most flexible specs with a 1 MB upper limit. RRB exams are strictest about signature ink colour (black only). If you are applying to multiple NTA exams (NEET + JEE + CUET), one well-prepared photo at 200×230 px, 50 KB, white background can be reused across all three. For SSC, take a 275×354 px crop using our crop image tool. For UPSC, you need a separate square crop — use the dedicated UPSC photo resizer.
