Yes, through a process called image tracing or vectorisation — the tool analyses colour regions in your image and converts them into vector paths. It works best on logos, icons, and flat illustrations with clear edges and limited colours. Complex photos will produce very large, intricate SVG files that look stylised, similar to a poster effect. For clean results, use source images with high contrast and simple shapes.
Microsoft Office applications have historically had poor SVG rendering and sometimes rasterise SVGs at low resolution on import. The fix: convert your SVG to a high-resolution PNG first (2x or 3x the display size you need), then insert the PNG into Office. Alternatively, update to Office 365, which has significantly improved SVG support.
It depends on the use case. For web (standard screens): 1× the display size. For retina/high-DPI screens: 2×. For print at 300 DPI: multiply the print dimensions in inches by 300 to get the pixel dimensions. SVG is resolution-independent, so you can export at any size without any quality loss — always export larger than you think you need.
If the SVG uses custom fonts that aren't embedded or available on the system doing the conversion, the text will fall back to a generic font. The fix: before converting, open the SVG in Inkscape or a similar editor and convert all text to paths (Object > Object to Path). This embeds the letter shapes directly as vector curves, making them font-independent.
