Converted, not traced

An EPS is already a vector file, so nothing is redrawn: Ghostscript reads the EPS and Inkscape writes the same shapes as SVG. That is why this converter keeps colors, unlike the image-to-vector converters, which trace a picture into one-color outlines.

What we measured

We converted a test EPS containing colored shapes, a thin line, a word of text and a gradient:

Typical uses

  • Putting an old EPS logo on a website: every browser shows SVG, and it stays sharp on any screen.
  • Using a stock vector file in Figma, Canva or Inkscape, which work with SVG better than EPS.
  • Cutting machines such as Cricut, whose software reads SVG.

Things to watch for

  • A white box behind the artwork: it was in the original EPS. Delete it in Inkscape or Figma.
  • Text you need to edit: it comes out as outlines, so retype it in your editor.
  • An EPS that only wraps a photo: the SVG will contain that same photo as an image, not new vector shapes.
