Is JPG or PNG better for an EPS logo?

JPG makes smaller files and suits photos, documents and white backgrounds. Neither has a transparent background here, but a PNG has no compression marks around sharp edges and text.

What resolution is the JPG?

600 dpi at the size set in the EPS, and the file says so: a 4-inch-wide logo is 2400 pixels wide and prints 4 inches wide.

Why is the background white?

JPG has no transparency, so the empty parts of the EPS are filled with white. Use EPS to SVG if you need a clear background.

Why do the colors look different?

The EPS uses CMYK print colors, and a JPG uses screen (RGB) colors, so each is converted to the nearest match. RGB colors in the EPS stay the same.

Can I convert the JPG back to EPS?

Only by tracing it, which gives one-color outlines (see JPG to EPS). Keep the original EPS for printing.

A JPG anyone can open

An EPS is a print file: most people you send it to cannot open it, and social media and website builders do not accept it. A JPG opens on every phone and computer and is accepted everywhere, so converting is the easiest way to share a logo or illustration that only exists as EPS.

Size and quality we measured

The JPG is saved at quality 95, so edges stay crisp, and it is marked 600 dpi, so it prints at the size set in the EPS. For a website or a profile picture, scale it down; a 2400-pixel logo is far bigger than any screen needs.

JPG has no transparency

Empty areas of the EPS become white, because a JPG cannot be transparent. On a white page or document that is invisible; on a colored slide or website it shows as a white box. For those, convert the EPS to PNG and remove the white, or use EPS to SVG, which keeps the empty areas clear.

Print colors on screen

EPS files from print shops often use CMYK colors. The JPG is RGB, so each is converted to its screen equivalent: pure CMYK red became (237, 27, 36).
RGB colors carry over almost exactly: a #1f77b4 blue came out as (31, 120, 180).
Fonts that the EPS names but does not embed are replaced with a standard font.
