Why change a PNG into a JPG

PNG keeps every pixel exactly, which suits logos and screenshots but makes photos heavy: a 512 × 512 photo was 773 KB as a PNG and 70 KB as a JPG. Many application forms, job portals and older websites also accept only JPG, so a PNG has to be converted before you can upload it.

Transparent backgrounds turn white

JPG cannot store transparency. Clear areas become white, and soft edges and shadows are blended with white, so a logo looks as it would on a white page. That works on white documents and websites; on a colored or dark background the white box shows, so keep the PNG there.

Colors, DPI and hidden details

  • The color profile is copied, so an image from a recent iPhone or Mac tagged Display P3 keeps its colors.
  • DPI is kept: a 300 dpi PNG gives a 300 dpi JPG.
  • 16-bit PNGs are reduced to 8 bits per channel, the most JPG can hold.
  • Camera details and location data (EXIF) are not copied into the JPG.
  • An animated PNG gives a JPG of its first frame.
