What PNG gives you

Every time a JPG is edited and saved again, it is compressed again and loses a little more detail. A PNG is stored losslessly, so you can crop, annotate and re-save it as often as you like without it getting worse. Some design tools, stores and upload forms also ask for PNG. Converting cannot bring back detail the JPG already lost: blur and blocky patterns from its compression stay as they are.

Expect a much bigger file

PNG keeps every pixel, and photos have millions of slightly different ones. In our tests:

The background stays as it is

PNG can be transparent, but a JPG has no transparency to carry over, so a white background is still white in the PNG. To cut out the subject, run the PNG through Remove Background afterwards.

Phone photos, colors and privacy

  • Portrait photos stay upright: the rotation your phone saved in the file is applied to the picture.
  • The color profile is kept, so photos tagged Display P3 or Adobe RGB show the same colors.
  • DPI is kept: a 300 dpi JPG becomes a 300 dpi PNG.
  • Camera model, date taken and GPS location (EXIF) are not copied, so the PNG does not reveal where it was taken.
  • CMYK JPGs from print work are converted to RGB, through their color profile when they include one.
