Some forum boards, older content systems, email tools and embedded devices accept GIF but not JPG. Converting is the quick way to get a picture into them. GIF suits logos, icons and simple drawings with few colors; for photos it is a compromise, as the rest of this page shows.
A JPG photo can contain millions of different colors; a GIF holds at most 256. The converter picks the 256 that best cover the picture and moves every pixel to the nearest one, without dithering. In our photo test the average pixel moved by about 3 of 255 levels, but some moved by up to 64, which shows as flat patches and bands in skies, skin and shadows.
GIF almost always comes out larger than the JPG. Even the flat logo grew, because JPG compression had left faint noise around its edges that the GIF has to store as extra colors.
