A line drawing is mostly empty space and a handful of colors, which GIF stores very compactly: our 40 × 30 mm test part came out at 26 KB, where the same drawing as a BMP was 7.9 MB. That makes GIF handy for showing a part or a floor plan on a website, in a help page or in a forum post, where nobody has CAD software to open the DXF.

Transparency and edges

The background is left clear, so the drawing sits on top of the page color. GIF transparency is all or nothing, though: each pixel is either fully see-through or fully solid. The soft, half-transparent edge pixels that smooth a line become solid, so lines look a little crisper and more stepped than in a PNG. On a dark page, black lines are hard to see; DXF to JPEG puts the drawing on white instead.

How the GIF shows your drawing

Lines in color 7 are drawn black; lines in red, blue and other colors keep them.
Not to scale: the picture is usually 1440 pixels tall and 1200 to 4800 pixels wide, following the drawing; very long or tall drawings get clear margins.
Only visible layers of model space are drawn, as one flat picture without layers.
The GIF is a still image, and GIF files hold no dpi, so set the print size yourself if you print it.
