DPI (Dots Per Inch) is metadata embedded in an image file that tells printing software how large to render the image on paper. Changing the DPI metadata without resampling keeps your pixel count identical — only the intended print size changes. When you resample, the converter recalculates the number of pixels needed to maintain the same physical print area at the new DPI: moving from 72 to 300 DPI requires roughly 4× more pixels in each dimension to print at the same physical size. This is why 72 DPI web images look pixelated when printed at full size — they simply don't have enough pixels.
Start with the highest-resolution original you have — a RAW file, high-resolution scan, or large JPEG from your camera. Upload it here, set the source DPI to match the original (72 for web screenshots, 96 for Windows Office exports, 300+ for camera RAW exports), set the target DPI to 300, and choose Resample mode. The tool will scale the canvas to the correct pixel count. If your source image is too low-resolution to begin with, no amount of upsampling will fully restore fine detail — use an AI upscaler first, then convert DPI here.
Indian government exam portals typically specify image requirements in pixels (width × height) and kilobytes, not DPI. For example, SSC CGL requires a photograph of 200×230 pixels in JPG under 50 KB. The DPI metadata is irrelevant for portal upload validation — portals check pixel dimensions and file size only. However, if you're starting from a high-DPI scanned photo and need to produce an image of exactly 200×230 pixels, setting Metadata Only mode at 96 DPI and then using our SSC Photo Resizer for exact pixel cropping is the recommended workflow.
The Physical Size panel shows you exactly how large your image will print. The formula is simple: physical size = pixel count ÷ DPI. A 1200×900 pixel image at 72 DPI will print at 16.67×12.5 inches. The same image at 300 DPI prints at just 4×3 inches — the pixels are packed more tightly together, producing a sharper result on paper but at a smaller physical size. Switch the unit toggle between inches, centimetres, and millimetres to match your print specification. The calculator updates live as you change DPI values.
