A ZIP file is a compressed archive format that bundles one or more files into a single, smaller package. Created in 1989, it remains the most widely supported archive format across all operating systems. ZIP files are useful for sending multiple files as a single email attachment, reducing storage space, backing up project files, and distributing software packages.
This tool uses JSZip — a well-maintained, open-source JavaScript library — to compress files entirely inside your browser tab using the DEFLATE algorithm. When you select files, they are read into browser memory. When you click "Create & Download ZIP", JSZip packages them into a binary ZIP blob and your browser prompts you to save it. Nothing is ever sent over the network.
ZIP is the best choice for maximum compatibility — it's natively supported on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux without any extra software. Formats like 7z and RAR offer better compression ratios but require third-party software to open on most devices. For everyday sharing and backup, ZIP's near-universal support makes it the practical default.
