PNG is lossless — it stores every single pixel exactly as-is, which takes significantly more space than JPEG's lossy compression. A photo that is 400 KB as a JPEG can easily be 3–5 MB as a PNG. For photos you're sharing online, JPEG or WebP is the smarter choice. Reserve PNG for logos, screenshots, illustrations, and anything where you need pixel-perfect sharpness or a transparent background.
Yes — JPEG has no concept of transparency. Any transparent areas in your PNG will be filled with a solid colour (white by default) when you convert to JPEG. If you must keep transparency, convert to WebP instead — it supports full alpha transparency and produces files roughly 25% smaller than PNG.
PNG-8 stores up to 256 colours using a colour palette, making it ideal for simple graphics like icons, logos, and flat illustrations. PNG-24 stores full 16-million-colour depth, which is better for photos and anything with gradients or subtle colour transitions. PNG-24 also supports 256 levels of semi-transparency; PNG-8 only has on/off transparency. PortImg exports PNG-24 by default, which is the correct choice for virtually every modern use case.
