Can the PNG have a transparent background?

No. The PNG is rendered on white. If you need transparency, convert the EPS to SVG, which leaves empty areas transparent, or remove the white with a background remover.

What resolution is the PNG?

600 dpi at the size set in the EPS: 4 inches wide becomes 2400 pixels wide, and an A4 page becomes 4958 × 7017 pixels.

Why does the text look different?

The EPS named a font without embedding it, so a substitute font was used. Ask whoever made the file for a version with the fonts embedded or turned into outlines.

The EPS used CMYK print colors, and a PNG holds screen (RGB) colors, so each one is converted to its nearest screen equivalent. RGB colors in the EPS are kept exactly.

Opening an EPS without design software

EPS files come from print shops, designers and stock sites, but Windows, recent versions of macOS, phones and most apps cannot open them. Converting to PNG gives you a picture of the artwork that opens everywhere, so you can check what is in the file or drop it into Word, Google Slides or a website.

How large the PNG is

The EPS is drawn at 600 dpi and cropped to the bounding box saved in it (usually the edges of the artwork; some files use a whole page), so the PNG is big enough to print or to shrink down. Its pixel size depends on the size set in the EPS:

White background, not transparent

The PNG always has a white background, even where the EPS was empty. That suits documents and white web pages. For a logo that has to sit on a colored background, convert the EPS to SVG instead, which keeps the empty areas transparent.

Colors and fonts

RGB colors come out as they are; in our test a #1f77b4 blue stayed exactly the same.
CMYK colors, common in print files, are converted to their screen equivalent: pure CMYK red became rgb(237, 28, 36).
If the EPS uses a font without embedding it, a substitute font is drawn instead, often a plain standard one, so lettering can look different.
