GIF is limited to 256 colors and to transparency that is either on or off. PNG has neither limit, so once a logo or icon is a PNG you can edit it with soft shadows, smooth edges and full color, and re-save it without loss.
Every pixel is copied with the color it has in the GIF, and clear pixels stay clear. Converting does not add colors the GIF never had: bands and speckles from its 256-color palette stay in the PNG until you edit them. What changes is what you can do next, because the PNG is no longer held to 256 colors.
PNG here is a still image, so an animated GIF is converted from its first frame only. In our test a three-frame animation with a clear background became a PNG of frame one, background still clear. To keep the motion, leave it as a GIF.
Logos and icons stay about the same size. Photo-like GIFs grow, because the PNG stores each pixel’s full color instead of a palette number.
