Frequently asked questions

How to compress an image online

Drop your images onto the box above, choose a quality or a target size such as 50 KB, and click Compress images. Each file shows its old and new size and how much it saved; download them one at a time or all together as a ZIP. Everything happens in your browser, on a computer, tablet or phone.

Compress an image to 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB

Online application forms — exams, jobs, passports and visas — often accept only small files, such as a photo under 50 KB or a signature under 20 KB. Choose the size the form asks for and the tool finds the best quality that fits. For photos that must also have exact dimensions, use our exam photo resizers or the image resizer first.

JPG, PNG or WebP?

JPG is the right choice for photos and opens everywhere. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which makes it large; WebP keeps the transparency and is usually much smaller, so PNGs are saved as WebP unless you choose otherwise. WebP also makes photos smaller than JPG at the same quality.

Compressing versus resizing

Compressing keeps the width and height and stores the picture more efficiently. Resizing makes the picture smaller in pixels. For very large photos, do both: set a maximum width such as 1920 px here, which is enough for any screen, and the file shrinks much further.
