GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame, which causes visible dithering (grainy noise patterns) on anything with gradients, skin tones, or rich colour. When you convert a photo or video clip to GIF, colour depth is the bottleneck — not the conversion tool. For smooth, full-colour animations, WebP animation or MP4 video will always look dramatically better.
WebP animation is the closest direct replacement — it supports the same looping, transparency, and frame-by-frame control as GIF but with full colour depth and up to 64% smaller file sizes. For larger or longer animations, MP4 (H.264) or WebM are even smaller and universally supported by modern browsers and apps.
