How to Convert GIF to DXF

  1. 1

    Upload your GIF file(s)

Click the upload area or drag your GIF files onto it: up to 10 files at once, 50 MB each.

  2. 2

    The dark parts are traced

Each image is made grayscale, and everything darker than mid-gray is traced into smooth closed outlines. Light areas are left out. This takes a few seconds per file.

  3. 3

    Download the DXF

Download each DXF file, or all of them as one ZIP.

Why Convert GIF to DXF?

  • Clean One-Color Outlines

The dark parts of your GIF become smooth closed outlines, ready to cut or edit in CAD.

  • Sharp When Enlarged

The result is outlines, not pixels, so it stays sharp when you scale it up for print or cutting.

  • Opens in AutoCAD and LightBurn

Works in AutoCAD, LibreCAD, QCAD, Fusion 360 and laser or CNC software such as LightBurn.

  • Free, No Watermark

No account and no watermark. Up to 10 files at once, 50 MB each. Uploaded and converted files are deleted automatically within 2 hours.

When to Use This Conversion

  • 01

    Logos and icons

A one-color logo or icon in GIF becomes clean DXF closed outlines. Multi-color logos come out as a single silhouette: every color darker than mid-gray is traced the same way.

  • 02

    Signatures, line art and sketches

Scanned signatures, ink drawings and pencil sketches with strong lines trace well. The paper disappears because it is lighter than mid-gray, leaving only the lines.

  • 03

    What DXF is used for

Laser cutting, CNC routing, vinyl and plasma cutting, and bringing a logo or sketch into a CAD drawing.

GIF vs DXF

GIF stores a grid of colored pixels. The DXF you get here holds closed POLYLINE outlines in a DXF drawing: the outline of the image's dark areas, traced from pixels into smooth curves.

Convert GIF to DXF when the image is a logo, icon, signature or drawing with clear dark shapes on a light background. For photos or multi-color artwork, keep the GIF: the trace would reduce it to a one-color silhouette.

GIF to DXF: Complete Guide

This converter traces your GIF into closed POLYLINE outlines in a DXF drawing. It is built for simple, high-contrast images: logos, icons, signatures, stamps, line drawings and shapes you want to cut with a laser or vinyl cutter. Knowing what the trace keeps helps you get a clean result the first time.

What the trace keeps, and what it drops

The image is turned into grayscale, and every area darker than mid-gray is traced into closed outlines; everything lighter is treated as background and left out. Colors are not kept: a dark red circle and a dark blue square come out exactly the same, while yellow, pale pink or light gray parts disappear completely. Curves are smoothed, and tiny specks (a pixel or two) are removed as noise. If your download is empty, the image had no areas darker than mid-gray.

Preparing your GIF for a clean trace

Only the first frame of an animated GIF is traced, and its limited palette is not a problem: what counts is whether each area is darker or lighter than mid-gray. Your GIF is converted to JPG before tracing, which adds slight noise along edges; on clear dark-on-light artwork the mid-gray threshold hides almost all of it. For the best outline, use dark shapes on a plain light background, at least a few hundred pixels across. Darken light-colored parts before uploading if you want them traced, and remove backgrounds that are gray or patterned.

Using the DXF file

The file opens in AutoCAD, LibreCAD, QCAD, Fusion 360 and laser or CNC software such as LightBurn. DXF outlines have no fill. In your CAD or cutting software, assign the outlines to a layer, line color or cut setting. The DXF has no units set: one pixel of your image is one drawing unit. After importing, scale the drawing to the real size you need.

For a logo, signature or drawing with clear dark lines, the DXF is a sharp, scalable outline you can cut or edit. For photos and multi-color artwork, a trace is not the right tool: keep the original GIF, or have the artwork redrawn by hand in a vector editor.
