A bitmap for software that cannot read DXF

Laser engraving programs, embroidery digitizers and older Windows tools often import bitmaps but not CAD files. BMP is the simplest bitmap there is, with no compression to decode, so almost anything that takes images can open it. The converter plots the drawing the way a printer would: dark lines on a white sheet.

Pixel sizes we measured

The bitmap is not to scale. It is sized by the drawing’s shape: usually 1440 pixels tall (4.8 inches at 300 dpi), with the width following the proportions, between 1200 and 4800 pixels wide. Very long or very tall drawings get empty margins.

What ends up in the picture

Lines in color 7, white on a black CAD screen, are plotted black so they show on the white sheet.
Lines drawn in red, blue or any other color keep that color.
Visible layers of model space are drawn; layers switched off or frozen, and paper space layouts, are left out.
Layers are merged into one flat picture, and the BMP records 300 dpi.

BMP files are large

BMP stores three bytes for every pixel, white background included, which is why a small part takes almost 8 MB. If your software also takes PNG or GIF, use DXF to PNG or DXF to GIF for a far smaller file: the same 40 × 30 mm drawing was 26 KB as a GIF.
