Who still needs BMP

BMP is the plain Windows bitmap: no compression, so it is simple to read. Some older Windows programs, embroidery and engraving tools, and small devices with their own displays take BMP but cannot decode JPG. Converting gives them a copy of the photo they can open.

How big the BMP gets

A color BMP stores three bytes for every pixel, whatever the picture shows, so its size depends only on the width and height. Check that the program you are feeding it can handle files this large:

What carries over

The pixels exactly as the JPG shows them, compression marks included: BMP does not make the picture sharper.
The DPI: a 300 dpi JPG gives a 300 dpi BMP; a JPG without one gets 96 dpi.
Color photos become 24-bit BMPs and grayscale photos 8-bit grayscale BMPs; CMYK JPGs from print work are converted to RGB.
Phone photos are turned upright; camera details, location and the color profile are not stored in the BMP.

Before you convert

If your program expects a set size, such as an embroidery hoop or a small screen, resize the JPG first with Resize Image to keep the BMP small.
Keep the JPG for sharing and backups: the BMP is many times larger and holds nothing extra.
